Homes are decorated, shrines are filled with food and traditional games played. April 28 – Birth of Buddha Visakha Bochea is the holiest day on the Buddhist calendar. It marks the birth, enlightenment and death of Buddha. May 1 – Labour Day Also known as May Day or International Workers’ Day, most countries celebrate Labour Day on May 1. May 2 – Royal Ploughing Ceremony Bonn Chroat Preah is celebrated to alert the nation to the commencement of the rice-growing season and to ready farmers for the ploughing period. During the ceremony oxen are given a choice of crops to eat. Based on the crops the oxen choose, predictions are made for the coming year’s harvest. May 13 – 15 – Birthday of King Sihamoni During the King of Cambodia’s birthday celebration, a spectacular fireworks display is held close to the riverbanks in front of the Royal Palace. September 7 – 11 – Ancestors’ Day Bonn P’chum Ben is a religious holiday held to bless the souls of ancestors, and all those who have passed away. It is customary for all household members to visit Buddhist temples. September 24 – Constitution Day Constitution Day is a public holiday called to celebrate the anniversary of the promulgation of Cambodia’s new constitution. October 29 – Coronation Day On the banks of the river in Phnom Phen, an impressive fireworks display conmemorates the coronation of King Sihamoni. October 31 – King’s Father Birthday Enjoy an evening fireworks on the river front in Phnom Penh, to celebrate King Norodom Sihanouk’s birthday. November 9 – Independence Day An early morning ceremony at the Independence Monument, usually attended by the King, marks this special day in Cambodian history. Fireworks can be enjoyed at night on the river front. November 20 – 23 – Water Festival The Water Festival marks the reversing flow of Tonle Sap River and also ushers in the fishing season. The highlight of the event are the boat races that are held over three days. When night falls, fireworks light the sky. People from all walks of life gather on the bank of the Tonle Sap for several days and nights.
